What did you do to your Jeep today?

    1. Somehow fixed the headlights when I went rooting around. I don't know what I did. 2. Replaced the ballast resistor so all four fan speeds work again.

    No Headlights

Thanks. I looked on Auto Zone's website (because tomorrow is Sunday), they don't list a relay but they do have a switch for $35.

    No Headlights

Our '97 has a separate pull knob for the headlights and a stalk that works the wipers only. I did try the high beams after you mentioned it and they don't come on either although if I pull the turn signal lever for the flash-to-pass feature (like a 4-banger is going to pass anything, heh), then...

    No Headlights

Funny, they worked fine last night. No headlights today. Parking lights and taillights work. Fuses are fine. Any ideas? In what may or may not be a related matter, the windshield wipers only work on high.

What did you do to your Jeep today?

Changed the oil. Max Life 10w-30 and a Purolator PureONE filter. Every 3000 miles religiously and the oil still looks like tar when it comes out.

    Oil weight and filter recommendation

They lessened the zinc (ZDDP) level in oil because it would contaminate the cats in cars that burn oil. That said, with roller lifters you don't need as much anyway. Diesels don't have the same type of cats, if any at all, and need the zinc so diesel oils still have it. Another thing, if you...

    Oil weight and filter recommendation

There are zinc additives, also high mileage oils and diesel-spec oils have more zinc. Most diesel-spec oils are 15w-40 but Wal-Mart has Rotella T-5 syn blend that is 10w-30. I used it once in the Jeep and oil consumption was higher with it but the Used Oil Analysis was fine. Now I use Valvoline...

Had the Banks header installed. Already had the Banks exhaust.

    Do I need carpet, really?

That's the thing, you can go without carpet but sometimes you need traction on the floors.

    Hard tops

I ran into the same thing. The few used hardtops I found were garbage and they wanted a ton of money for them. I got the Bestop sailcloth unit instead for less money. I got their headliner later to use in the winter for about $100. '97 to '02 softops are a different part number from the '03...

    Paint job

I had ours done two years ago at a pro shop near my house for $2200. Paint the whole thing, original color, and install two new Rugged Ridge front fenders (I bought separately) to replace the rusty originals. Took the whole thing apart, basecoat/clearcoat, show quality, but that's how I roll...

    Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival 2012

I live about 25 miles away. Didn't go Saturday because it rained off and on all day but I did go on Sunday. Got to meet Rick Pewe. Now I can say that I've met Pewe and off-roaded with Jim Allen. Pics I took: Jeep Festival 2012 pictures by JOdata - Photobucket

    15w-40

My mistake, I misread that and thought you said "leaving Texas" and not "leaving in Texas". In the heat down there 15w-40 should be okay. I have run Rotella T-5 10w-30 diesel-spec in my 97 2.5L and the used oil analysis was very good but for some reason oil consumption was very high with it, 4...

    15w-40

A 2005 IS a modern engine. Diesel-spec oil like 15w-40 has more zinc in it than modern gas engine oil but as far as I know all modern engines have roller lifters so the extra zinc is not necessary. You didn't say where you were moving to but I would use a high-mileage 5w-30 or 10w-30 like Max...

    15w-40

Since you live in Texas you shouldn't have to worry about the 15w-40 in cold weather. When it comes to oil, the only way to know for sure is to get a used oil analysis (UOA). I use Blackstone Labs, costs $25. Blackstone Labs It is perfectly okay to use a diesel-spec oil in a gas engine...

    95 yj oils.. Help?

Older manual transmissions call for gear oil. Newer ones use ATF. Our 97 is an automatic but the owners manual specifies ATF for both automatic and manual transmissions as well as the transfer case. I'm not sure what a 95 calls for in the transmission but don't be surprised if it's ATF.

    Trick to use with POR-15

The trick I use with POR-15 is to cover my entire body in paint-proof attire. If you get any on your skin and don't get it off with acetone within five minutes, it will take two weeks to wear off. I know this. Also I buy cheapo paint brushes and just throw them out when I'm done.
