1970 CJ5 Rebuild/Redesign

I will start the rebuild with a picture or 2 of the CJ5 as I received it.
I will attempt to add comments and pictures when ever changes are made.
The CJ5 with the metal top is a parts Jeep that followed me home after I picked up the CJ with the new black body and fenders. The tub is just setting on the frame.

After the CJ was trailer ed home the body or tub was removed and placed out of the way for now.
The front axle housing and springs were removed and I found out that it is a Dana 27 with 3.73 gears.
The rear axle was removed and it is a Dana 44 with the same gears, now a days you never know what someone will throw together.
The transfer case is still bothering me, it is a model 18 with one shift lever. I thought sure it should have been a model 20????
The rear was taken apart because someone got dirt and grit in the housing and it needs to be cleaned out. I will replace the bearing and seals while it is apart.

The engine was removed and placed on the engine stand because I found some water shooting out of one of the sparkplug holes. So it has to come apart.

Radiator and grill were also removed and the frame was taken outside for sand blasting.
I found the frame to be in very good condition, no cracks or rusted areas. Now the sand blasting will tell me if I missed any bad spots.
Please note, the steering and brake and clutch pedals were also removed before going outside.

OK as stated before the rear axle housing was taken apart and the housing was pressure washed.

The bearings and seals were all removed from the carriage and the pinon. I will now look for new seals and bearings.

Now the front axle housing model 27 is placed on the bench for inspection.
The springs and u bolts will be set a side until I decide what to do with them.
New springs, u bolts and 11 inch drums and brake shoes will be installed as part of part of the rebuild.
New drums, shoes, hardware, and backing plates are shown on the shelf behind the work bench.

35 to 40 years ago I built one of the first if not the first high rider trucks in the York Pa. area. It was a 1964 Ford pickup with added spring leafs and spacers. The bottom of the rocker panels were 36 inches off the ground. Yes you had to climb into it, many people could not even get in.
I did that and now I am going to make this low rider that is still a 4x4 and still digs with all 4 tires.

If you want to drive a tractor buy a John Deere.
