axle advice please

wobbleshaft

Hey Everyone,
This is my first post and I'm not much on computers so bear with me please. I have a '76 cj7 and last sunday I spun my amc 20 rear end. She was really digging in before it broke. I think anyone would have been impressed.

My dilemma is this. I don't know whether to fix the amc 20 or maybe swap out axles to some Dana 44's. I'm running 35x12.50's and the Jeep spends about 80% of it's time off road on forest service roads in Western North Carolina.(some pretty rough stuff)

Anyone out there got any advice?

Also, anyone know a good place to locate axles in the Carolina area?

Welcome to the Z.

Go with some aftermarket 1piece axleshafts, the AMC20 is a decent axle once you address the weak 2piece shafts.

I wouldn't mess with D44's unless you're willing to upgrade both the front and rear to a wider pair of axles, then consider Waggy d44's, or a Waggy front d44 and Isuzu Rodeo rear d44 (discs and matching 6-lug).

I agree. Stick with the Dana 20 Carrier, just beef it up. If you change the axle assemby you'll have a lot fabricating to do and a lot of $$$ to spend.

Tellico 4x4 has Superior EV20E for narrow track, Evo series shaft kits for $219.99 a set including bearings and seals. 4Wheelers supply in MO has the same kits for $240 and free shipping. so take your pick. 4WD, Quadratec & 4Wheel parts will match the price of these two shops. All you have to do is A S K or you don't G E T. Go with rolled splines whatever you do and 100% USA forged blanks.:bomb:

There are Narrow trac 44's but there is really not much of a strength difference between the two.

If you think you will break again and you want a stronger upgrade than the 20/44.. I would look for a 35 spline Semi Floating 60 from a FSJ pickup and then just run some spacers on the front.
