gauges

Hello all,

I"m a new to this forum and just purchased my first CJ. I've always wanted a CJ and now that i'm getting married in 5 months I figured i'd better buy all my toys before DOOMS day.

1980 CJ7

I need help trying to re-live the guages. Right now only the GAS/Battery/Turn Signals lights/Emergency Brake light/ work. Temperature/Speedometer/odometer/oil pressure guague/dash lights do not work. The previous owner told me it stopped working when he got the stereo installed. Can you guys point me to the right direction. I just ordered my Haynes manuel, so it will take 3-5 days. I want to start working on her this weekend.

Thanks in advance for the help.

If the problem arose from the stereo installation, my first guess would be the fuses. It seems the previous owner may have blown some during the installation. The installation of the radio would other wise not interfere with the gauges (except for the lighting, because some stereos have a lighting signal input to dim the stereo lighting).

I'm not so sure how much the Haynes will help with electrical issues...

If the fuses are all good, then someone must have cut a ground or hot lead for the gauges when doing the radio.

first off... welcome to Jeepz! you'll like it here!!! and 2nd - youre smart to get it b/4 "mine becomes ours!!" ($$$ that is) - anyway - sounds like your problems are guage or sending unit related - the speedo/odometer should be cable driven, not electric... as for the temp and oil ga. - i know my 89 has a bad sending unit for the oil pres. - and the dash lites are prob fuse related or could be the light switch also - it has a rheostat that controls the brighness and if it goes bad the dash lites wont work at all (had that prob in an old 71 new yorker back in the day) - just remember, wrenching is all part of the experience - and you learn as you go! (besides, if those are your only problems you're waaaay ahead of the game w/a new project!) welcome again!
