Heater Core

Hey Jeepers, I have a 93 YJ that I changed the heater core on in Aug 2010, but it doesn't get as hot as it use too. I ran it bypassed from March until August, before changing the core. All vents, controls cables, vacuum valve, thermostat(new 12/2010), water pump(new 12/2010), etc. have been checked, all a operational. But the heat is not as hot as last year. Using a stick thermometer I get 120 degrees at the defroster vents in the window, with the jeep at idle and fan at meduim. This figure should be at least 165 degrees or greater. I have burped it, using my compressor, blew air through it, using a vacuum, and sucked air through it. The only difference is that the old core was copper and the new core is aluminum(new 8/2010). Has anyone experience this or have any additional thoughts... Thanx!!!

Unfortunately some aftermarket heater cores simply don't work as well as they should. My brother had that problem with a Ford some years ago, eventually went back to a factory unit.

I recently replaced the heater core in my 1989 Jeep YJ. The first one I got from Napa was aluminum and light/cheaply made. It did not have the mounting tabs welded on. The sales guy at Napa told me I would just have to fabricate a way to mount it. The heck with that. I went to Autozone instead. They had a copper heater core that had the mounting tabs already on it. It was heavier and better quality than Napa. Anyway.....the new heater core actually heats better than the old leaky one.
