The Commander is a great truck, well put together.
We narrowed the choices down to the Explorer and Jeep. Trailblazer/Envoy is a waste. Rented one for a week thru our insurance. Drives like a floating soft boat, you feel sick to your stomach. Yes, looking at it also hurts.
What sold me on the Commander over the Explorer is image. It looks like an SUV and that's important to us. So many rounded 4x4's out there, they all look the same. Ford did a great update on the Explorer. Better all around but just too big looking.
A lot of people comment on the Commander as being BIG. Even read a review where it was pitted against a Tahoe.
The numbers don't lie: (from an EMail I sent to my brother, he lost the bet)
...............................Length Width Height Wheelbase
Commander................188.5 / 74.8 / 71.9 / 109.5 (inches)
Ford Explorer..............193.4 / 73.7 / 72.8 / 113.7
Envoy (5 Seater)........191.6 / 74.7 / 71.9 / 113.0
Envoy (7 Seater)........207.6 / 74.7 / 75.5 / 129.0
Durango....................200.8 / 76.0 / 74.3 / 119.2
(Jap SUVs)
Toyota Sequoia..........203.9 / 78.9 / 75.8 / 118.1
Acura MDX................188.5 / 77.0 / 71.3 / 106.3 - closest match in size
Head room is awsome, far more than the Explorer. The handling is much better than our old G.Cherokee (had 265/70R16's on it). The front and rear sway bars are massive in size. Big improvement with the coil over front end set-up over bumps.
You've gotta check it out. The more I look at this truck, the more I like it. My wife was pushing for the 7 seater, I wanted to go for the G.Cherokee again. A safe choice? No regrets now, hope to keep it longer than 8 years this time........
