Fiat Chrysler is banking on the newly resigned Compass being a big hit. According to them, markets all around the world need and want a small, off-road-capable SUV.
Proving it means business, Jeep is including a Trail Rated Trailhawk version of the Compass in the lineup. It boasts some impressive features, like a 20:1 crawl ratio, the ability to ford up to 19 inches of water, and skid plates. The approach/breakover/departure angles are 30/24/34 degrees.
There are two four-wheel-drive systems available for the Compass: Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low. Both are paired up with Selec-Terrain, which has five settings. Trailhawk models also come with Selec-Speed Control.
At the same time, Jeep uses a fully independent suspension, plus a frequency damping strut system in the front and rear for good dynamics for driving on roads. Body rigidity is far improved, thanks to the body and frame being engineered to be a single unit. Jeep says over 65 percent of the SUV’s structure is high-strength steel, which is great for both handling and safety.
In the North American market, the Jeep Compass will only come with the 2.4-liter Tigershark engine with MultiAir2. It’s good for 180 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque. Even better, you can get a six-speed manual transmission, or a nine-speed automatic.
