new front axle

So I just bought a new jeep. Decided to do a little off roadin and broke one of my U joints. One of the joints at the tire. Luckily it's still under warranty, so I took it into the dealer. After inspecting it they called me to say they are gonna replace the entire front axle. Now I'm no jeep expert but I've done work on other vehicles and this seemed a little exsessive. The dealer said it was better to replace the whole thing and not to worry since it's all covered by my warranty. Covered or not I'm kinda warry about them swapin out the whole front end when it only has less than 9k on the odometer. any thoughts?

They're talking about the inner and outter axle shaft. Not the whole front end. You probably wiped out one of the ears when the joint broke...

Yeah, u-joints tend to take out the axle shafts with them. If they want to replace the entire front end, maybe the knuckle or housing was damaged?

What yjdave said sounds right, since they initially told you they would change the ujoint. Sometimes referring to the 'axle' may only refer to one axleshaft. You may want to call them to clarify, but I can't imagine them replacing the entire housing and other related parts.

They will probably change the whole front axle since the dealers are not competent enough to service it.

I wouldn't put it past the dealer to replace the whole assembly. I've heard of crazier stealership stories. :roll:

you gotta remember they charge up to $90/hr for labor so if you do the math its cheaper for them to R/R the entire axle than tear yours apart... either way - dont complain... if you tweaked the other side or some internals you need not worry about hidden/concealed damage... its all cost to them.... i had some play on the driver seat of my old intrepid and they swapped out the entire seat assembly rather than change out one motor - cheaper to them... better for me!
