Hello ya'll, I just found your sight, pretty neat. Any way I have a 1997 TJ W/ a 4 cly. and a 5 speed, I dont know which one it is AX?? The Q I have is that last month when I presed the clutch to the floor, there was a "Shiiiirrrr" noise and then a squeel not too loud but noticeable. Then two days ago the nasty thing started making new noises, kinda like beans in a can, (or rocks take your pick). Either way, not good. Is this new noise the "Throw-out" Bearing or could it be something else??? And whats this I read about not using the recomended g??5 fluid in the transmission?? Thanks ya'll :-? [addsig]

Welcome to the board. I'm not sure what the sound is, but from earlier posts I understand that the GL5 rated gear lube can eat the brass sycronizers in your transmission. I am changing the fluid in my transmission on saturday with redline, I think a few of the guys on her use redline and there was another brand that is slipping my mind. [addsig]

As for the bean can can't help much but that sounds reasonable as to being the throw out. I just changed the internal slave cylinder in my ax5 on a 2.5L 4 banger and the slave has the throw out bearing all in one piece. Do not know much about the TJs .Save money and get Peenzoil Synromesh gear oil. End the cold morning stiff transmission shift. Redline may be a better product but 15 bucks a qt or 5 bucks a qt you decide. Now I would never quibble over 40 bucks if I thought it would make a big difference. Get it at Autozone. My ax5 held about 3.5 qts. Good luck and welcome to the board. Tug[addsig]

You have the AX5 transmission. Like these guys said, try the Redline MT90 or GM Synchromesh, see is that doesn't quiet the transmission down quite a bit.

Your throwout bearing should be fine, unless you have a LOT of miles, or the jeeps had other rough service.[addsig]

If the noise is happening when the clutch pedal is being pushed in like you said then yeah there is a possible chance it could be the throw out bearing. How to tell exactly I cant say for sure. [addsig]

I've heard that a failing pressure plate can cause that too... just my .02

Hey tug... is that a pic of you???

If it is making that noise when the clutch is pressed it is almost definitely the throw out bearing, it does come as one peice. but it isn't that difficult to replace just time consuming.(like everything) Mine went in my yj about two months ago and it sounded kinda like what you describe.[addsig]
