Jeepers,
I've lived in moab for twenty-five years ! I moved here when I was twenty-eight. I was struck by the quiet .... I first arrived in October and stayed thru november.
I came as a mountain biker .... for the first fat tire fest in '85. I grew up in the S.F. bay area and couldn't / didn't want to keep up with the "rat race".
We were five bike riding fools on summer vacation when we pulled up in front of moab's little natural foods coop. Oh the hippie girl was so cute!
then, when I drove my 57' vw van out Kane Springs road to our camp site ... and shut off that thrashing motor ... I REALLY heard the quiet; I was hooked !!! How much for a house on five acres???? "no money down" !!! I'll take one!
So, I soon realized that jobs were as few in Moab as traffic jams. So, I bought a small restaurant on Main street. I rebuilt it, learned to cook (like mad!!!) and made a reasonable success - for six years! - the Star diner! But then ... I was cooked. I saw a very beautiful place for sale which was worth about what my diner was. I put up a 'for sale' sign and .. eight months later ... I was OUT of the diner biz and INN the B&B biz. Right around then, I met my Love, Terry and together we ran a B&B for ten years ......
During these years, Moab has changed somewhat. For us, it appears to have grown 100%, but when we visit the "outside world" we realize that it is one of the smallest towns on the map; and one with people visiting from all over the world; people who love Moab, because it IS so special. And when we look at home prices ... ! Moab is a LOT better than MOST places.
No traffic ... mostly, NO pollution, quiet, beautiful, surrounded by Nat'l parks ....
But, now .... I must admit, I want a change .... I want to travel. and - as nature abhors a void ... our place is for sale. Its time - and only fair - that the new generation should 'inherit the earth' .....
