You are correct. That 4000# winch will due just fine and even better if you use a snatch block. Just because you pull out a winch cable does not mean that you have to be able to move mountians with your equiptment.

Set the e-brake. Have someone shift the trans while you look under the jeep. Pinpoint the noise. Also check for broken trans mount and broken motor mounts. Watch the driveshaft while shifting. If it is jumping around alot you might check the rearend.
