Sorry might sound like a dumb question but im just starting out. i have a 09 sahara andI was told that you should be moving when you activate the 4 wheel drive about 15-20 mph. will the jeep be strained if i just leave it on 4x4 and will it use more gas if i leave it on 4x4.

Thanks for you help.

It will not use much more gas if you leave it in 4wd,but you will destroy the front end driving it on pavement.Atleast in the older models if you are in 4wd and drive it on dry pavement and try to turn it hops all around and makes some bad noises. They are not meant to drive in 4wd all the time.As far as moving when shifting into 4wd.I normally dont, but I do have a standard and put it in neutral and leave the clutch out.

The older Jeeps like my 54 you have to stop but the newer models have shift on the fly capablities. I believe on most up to about 45 mph:shock:

2WD saves gas and parts.

Chrysler's web site says for a TJ you should be moving from 5mph to 50mph to switch to 4h and 3mph to 10 mph for 4l

Be at a total stop to shift into 4 low! Otherwise you'll hear some loud noises, which are bad! Although i'm assuming if the new jeeps are anything like all the other new 4x4's, it won't let you shift to 4 low unless you're stopped.

my speeds where off some but this is from the Jeep site

Can I shift into 4WD Low Range when stopped?

Shifting into or out of 4WD Low Range is possible with the vehicle completely stopped, however, difficulty may occur due to the teeth of the gears not being properly aligned. Several attempts may be required for clutch teeth alignment and shift completion to occur. The preferred method is with the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage 4 Low Range with the vehicle moving faster than 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h).

Can I shift into 4WD High Range at any speed?

Shifting into 4WD High Range can be made with the vehicle stopped or in motion. If the vehicle is in motion, shifts can be made up to 55 mph (88km/h).

This is all great info. Thank You. What is the diffrence between 4High and 4low. What would be some situations where i would use either one.

4H would be for bad roads like snow where you will be doing speeds of up to 60MPH..Also 4h you would use in mud..need faster tire speed to get you through.

4L is great for off road rock crawling or trail riding.I have also used it a few times to pull bushes out of the ground.Max speed is about 15MPH.It is also nice for parades. Not really recommended on dry pavement, but if you are only going straight it is nice to leave the clutch out in 1st gear and never touch the gas or clutch again.
