Update on my Jeepz Site

I almost destroyed my engine this weekend. I changed the oil and the gasket from the old filter stuck to the flange. I didn't notice and put the new filter on. I didn't notice any difference tightening the new one down. Luckily, I didn't drive it until the next day, when I had a 6" diameter puddle of oil to let me know something was wrong. That old gasket was crooked in there just enough to leak a little. Who knows what would have happened had I headed down the road without noticing.

I had never thought to check that before... Just off with the old filter, on with the new. I just thought I would share this with anybody else that may not have thought about it like me. I will certainly be looking at the old filter from now on!

A good lesson learned in a good way. My dad taught me that one when I was 12 or 13 years old. I've made it a habit to keep the old filter right next to me when I put the new one on. I just use a dab of the old oil to lube the gasket on the new one, so that way I know if the old gasket is intact on the filter. Also, lubing the new one helps prevent it from sticking when it's time to take it off.

That's a common mistake.....that hardly ever gets mentioned. Maybe your post will save someone from a big mistake.

Oh, don't feel bad. I rushed home from work one day to do a oil change in my Camaro before I took it out one night. I completed the oil change and THEN I realized I forgot to put the drain plug back in! That was all the oil I had, and my only car at the time.

Like Sparky said, always "seat" the new filter's gasket to avoid that happening again. Good thing you caught it!

RE: If I want to make a steering arm...

yea i changed my moms oil inher 05 suburban once and did that not even realizing it and it spewed everywhere when i started it up.

hehehe.... done both... the double seal on my old 68 GT fastback stang (sprayed everywhere) and the drain plug trying to impress a girl in high school changing her oil (cost lots more oil and did NOT impress!) ... both were "doh!!!" moments... lessons well learned though... you'd be suprised how a post on such an "obvious" thing like doubling up seals can really help someone out! youre lucky you caught it when you did!

Exactly why I did! I figured 90% of the people who read it would say "duh," but the other 10% might be saved the trouble...

RE: Some custom work for ya...

yep... my philosophy... if you save one engine... it was worth the time to post! (kinda like the old saying "the only stupid question is the one you didnt ask...")

RE: Rocker guards

This is the kind of post jeepz was built on. The simplest thing that you do and goes wrong has is or will happen to us all. Teaching from our mistakes and our victorys is how we help each other. tug "great post you have here"
