Advice on transmission

Here's a little advice for anyone who is considering replacing their broken AX-15.... Do yourself a BIG favor and replace it with an upgraded transmission. It is well worth the extra few bucks. I just replaced mine with another ax-15 less than 2 months ago... and i'm already getting a rattle in it. Maybe I'm a little hard on it with plowing... but I would think that a new transmission would be able to handle some torque for at least one winter. I guess I'll be saving some money up to get me the king of 5 speeds... the almighty NV4500... I'm intending on stroking to a 4.5 or 4.6, that's a lot of torque there... I refuse to use disposable trannies again and again....Just a word for the future... Snit[addsig]

Sounds like you guys are using a GL5 rated gear oil in the AX15 like the owners manual recommends, a HIGE no-no. The owner's manual is WRONG

The GL4 and GL5 rated gear oils have a high sulfer content that is corrosive to the brass synchronizers of the AX5 and AX15. You need to use a GL3 rated gear oil, or something like Redline MT90 synthetic gear oil, a GL4 that is specially formulated to be easy on the brass synchros. The AX15 is not a bad transmission, if you have the right gear oil in it.

DC has acknowledged this error in the manual, but refuses to warranty any bad trannies, and there are a LOT

I have always used synthetic gear oil safe for use with brass synchros, I thought that it may be a good idea to use top quality safeguarded oils in all of my moving parts. I use my jeep for plowing, so the internals are always under tremendous torque. I read that the suggested oil is harmful to the synchros in the ax-15... it's pretty ignorant that they would not take responsibility for their mistake. Oh well... I guess for normal use, the ax-15 could be a decent transmission... but being that it is only a medium duty transmission, and the 4.0 HO is a pretty tough motor, serious modifications to the motor would supercede the transmission's limitations. I am intending on soon stroking my motor to a 4.5, and I don't really want to have to get under there again to replace it after I do that, especially when its my daily driver, off road rig, and work vehicle..... To answer the question on what uses the NV4500... It is the 5 speed that can be found in later model Chevy and Dodge full size trucks. Great low end gearing with a wide range to a great overdriven 5th gear... if you want to go further... the NV5600 is the 6 speed version of this transmission. I guess it would depend on preference of the driver/mechanic and duty of the vehicle. [addsig]

The Dodge version of the NV4500 has the lower first gear. I think the 5600 would be TOO large and heavy to be realistic for a Jeep application.

I think the AX15 can handle stock small-block v8 power, so it should do fine behind any 4.0L motor, stroked or not. Everybody talks smack about the Peugeot BA10/5 being a weak transmission, but mine held up fine behind a built 350, go figure

What does everybody think the chances are of someone writing a letter to DChrysler about the mistake in the manual and signing as many names as we can get who have had the problem??? cause it is definetly their error so why should we all be coughing up all the money and time. [addsig]

i would be interested in signing that petition if you decide to go through with it

which small block v8 do you mean there Bounty? I was told by numerous transmission specialists to get rid of the japanese transmission because of its weakness... Well I guess if you are to replace a 15 with a NEW one, so you can treat it right, and not put the wrong oil in it... then it should live alright. [addsig]

I think the AX15 will stand up to the abuse behind any normally aspirated small block v8.[addsig]
