cj-3b engine replacement

The engine in my buddy an my CJ-3B has seen its better day. Im wanting to look at all the options before making a decision. Drawing on yalls expertise, what kind of replacement motor would be best. We mostly do mud but have gotten into trail riding and am looking to build it up that way. Not looking for a big block with ungodly amounts of horsepower, but something respectable so that when its cranked up you know its not the original F-134. Thanks in advance for any help.

maybe a stock 4 banger(2.5) with a five speed(or 4 speed auto) out of a newer jeep?

maybe the 4.0.

2.8 or 4.3 chevy V6?

Just something I´ve been rolling around in the gray matter. It would probably be better to stay with the tried and proven. But I have been looking real hard at a couple of rusted out Range Rovers and my magnet tells me most of the motor is aluminum. I have no idea about the interchangability of parts, but do know the small V-8 patent was purchased from Buick.[addsig]
