im looking for a dana 44 for my TJ and i was told that the axle tubes on the dana 35 are the same as the ones for the 44. I have searched every junk yard in my area and no one has one for a TJ. does any know if its possible to use a D44 from an XJ and have the tubes from a D35 installed into the D44????

TJ D44's are going to be very rare or non-existant in the yards. You can find them on the net.

TJ D44's have the same wall thickness to the axle tubes as the D35, but not the same tube.

If you find a XJ D44, jump on it, it's a gold mine. They are getting to be rare since the fit into Wranglers so nicely. They have thicker wall axle tubes than the newer TJ D44's. You'll have to weld on the TJ brackets, or sell it to a YJ or XJ owner and use the profit to buy a TJ D44.

so do i... cant find one tho but i found 2 ford 9" in a scrap pile from a bunch of stolen cars dont know if there worth takin ones rusted really bad....

I just got me an XJ D44 just the other day... thanks to bounty giving me the info! oh and jersey being full of non jeepers, they don't know about the junkyard full of jeeps! No offese to jersey jeepers on this board of course!

XJ and TJ have the same connections points when it comes to axels and almost any other part on the two. A lot of Tj will use the front end off an XJ an to replace the stock of a TJ. So a 44 of another TJ or XJ will work with no problem. But I am not sure about putting a 35 rod inside a 44 housing, never tried it.

Think again  XJ uses leaf springs in the back, TJ is coils, so the XJ axle will not necessarily work 'no problem'. They don't have the same connection points when it comes to the rear axles

The XJ is set up for SOA, so it won't bolt in to a SUA YJ. Don't know where it's at for width of the spring perches.

The Chrysler 8.25 that came under many late model XJ's with the tow package is another strong axle that will be a good upgrade. I think locker options are more limited.

what doe u thin kis stronger the ford 9", D44 or the chrysler 8.25?
which would u recommend for an axle for a TJ?
they both have to be welded for mounts so id rather get the strongest axle possible now than get one thats OK and then get another one later.....
thanks

i'd say go with the 9"... the dana 60 is tougher than the 44... but if you can find any good axle with floating hubs, you'll be happier

If you're going to keep the D30 in the front, which isn't too bad for tires up to 33" or 35" depending on how you wheel, you'll want something of comparable width in the back. Any D60 will have to be narrowed, as will most 9"s. I'd look at an XJ D44 or 8.25" for the correct width and bolt pattern. The 8.25 still uses c-clips, but it's not an issue on this stronger axle, and is stronger than the D44.

If you want to swap out both axles, go for D44's front and rear out of an early 80's Wagoneer (SJ). They have driver's side diff and 6 lug wheels.

well isnt the ford 9" about the same width as the D44?
i cant find any D44 at all in my area.. and i dont want to buy off line, shipping on something that big will rape me.... im still a student so i really dont have all this money it sux,...

what about axles out of a ram charger? a buddy of mine has one and he wants to sell it to me but i dotn have enough $$$

Okay..

Depends on what vehicle it's out of, most vehicles have axles of different widths, you usually want to stay away from full-width like trucks, full-size Broncos and Blazers, RamChargers, etc.
