Early CJ5 Serial number

I purchased an early CJ5 for $2500 last month and began the restoration. I am trying to figure out what year the Jeep was manufactured. I cannot find a serial number anywhere on the frame or body. However, I did find one on the engine block. It reads SD 807895. Does anyone know how to interpret this and figure out a year? Thanks!

My block number is sd 806279. So yours has to be newer than mine. Mine is a 56 If I had to guess yours is the same or a 57 or so....

Hello! The early CJ-5 body's were pretty much the same from 60-75 then they changed in 76. Yours has to be in that area. You need to give more info about its motor and transmission, transfer case ect. for me to tell you the year. I am in the middle of restoring a 74' cj5 myself! It has the old body style, and my serial number is on a sticker!! My sticker is located on the dash of mine right beside the steering column. I believe that's where they are supposed to be for my year. Maybe one of the previous owners of your jeep replaced the dash and relocated/removed the sticker. Just a thought, best of luck to ya for the restoration!!

I have the 4 cylinder F 134 engine with the 3 speed transmission. I am not sure what the transfer case nomenclature is but it has two sticks. The left stick has an in and out position. The right stick has 4H, N and 4L positions. I only took one picture so far but as you can see I have removed the brakes. After this picture was taken I gutted the front axle and differential for a good cleaning. I found out it has the Dana 27 up front and Dana 44 in the back. The previous owner seems to of had taken multiple parts from different jeeps and made one. The windshield is a later model with the wiper motor on the bottom. It has a "Willys" stamped tailgate. The body has a data plate on the drivers side firewall that is clearly not original It says manufactured by AM General Corp and lists a 11 digit serial number that has been semi scratched out. The grill, body and windshield are all different colors under the spray paint OD green. I am hoping to find out what year the engine is based off the serial number. It is probably the oldest and only original part on the jeep. Thanks guys! More pics to come as the project progresses.

Sounds like the t-90 3speed and the d18 transfer case .... Based on your pic I'm not sure how original the body is .. But in gonna guess it's late 50's early 60's I have the same engine transmission and tranfercase. But with a Dana 25 up front an a 44 in the rear

Matt my block number is also 806279. the serial # on top of the frame is 23319 can you give me an idea what year jeep I own and how to get the rest of the vin #. I am currently rebuilding for a hunting rig but would like to register it so it will be street legal.:???:

My serial number. Is 52596. And another number off the engine. Is 4J 152039. So I don't know what you have!! But I think mine is 56. Based on the numbers and the story I was told my the guy I bought it from ...

Yeah. I know. I dont have one either. Bit if you have the original plates on the fire wall. They have the whole vin number. I don't have mine they must have rotted away long ago !

Matt, if you have used the serial number info these guy's have sent you, you would realize that '62 and earlier used only the serial #. At least that's the way I understand it. I hope that's the right understanding, but I'm not sure either. Best of luck to ya brother. I'm going to the authorities to see if I can get this thing papered.

[Desert Rat 1960]

These production totals and serial number series for all Willys-Overland models, are taken from compilations handwritten by Norton Young, 1959-61. Mr. Young was an employee in the Willys-Overland Engineering Department. The figures were transcribed in 1998 by Charlie Weaver, Winston-Salem, NC, who says:

"In a talk with Norton Young a week or 2 ago, he told me that by 1961, the folks in the corner offices at K-F had no more interest in these statistics so he quit keeping them. you need to check for the vin number. its on the firewall in the engine bay on the drivers side, it may be hard to read but its there. once you get that there is a vin decoder on this site under the site map tab at the top.

My VIN is long gone, hence I was trying to see if I could use the engine block SN to figure out it's age.

Ok so I posted the engine block serial number on my first post here months ago. How do I interpret this number and figure out the year? Thanks
