RE: help! need to bring life back to my fender flares

I'm looking at swapping out the 30 and 35 in my YJ. I was wondering if someone could shoot me some suggestions for donor vehicles. I'm looking to keep close to the stock axle width and keeping the project relatively simple. I know that Waggy 44's are good up front and Scout II 44's are good in the rear, but does anybody know the years of these. Or if there are suggestions for others I'm all ears. Thanks in advance.

The scout rear is smaller then the waggy front. Either get a f/r waggy or you can make the waggy front shorter be putting cj rotors/hubs/calipers on w/ scout spindles. Thats what i did but i wish i would have went wider with front and rear waggy axles.

Some late 80s and early 90s XJs had a D44 in the rear. Got mine out of an 89. It's even got the same WMS to WMS, 60".

One of my later projects is to put on the ford 9" axles. you can find the shorter 9" off of the 60-70 broncos.

Just a note Scout 44's have diffrent steering angles, knuckle sizes and they are a pain-in-the-*ss to fit in a jeep. It costs about 150$ for most places to re-tube a 44 to match a jeeps width and 300$ for bigger and better axles to match.

High Altitude Carb Adjustment

The Scoutt II axles are about 2" narrower than the YJ axles, and the narrow track waggy front axle is about 1/2" wider than the Scout II version.

The XJ rear D44 is a great option if you were planning to retain the D30 front. The midsize Ford 8.8" is also a good candidate in that situation, and it's much easier to find. The problem is that you want a front D44 too. Those axles match the D30s width and bolt pattern, but not any of the factory offered D44 fronts that you'll find. A rear axle is the easy part anyway. Find a good front axle to use and then worry about finding a matching rear if you can't locate a set.

The knuckles and all related parts will interchange between a D44 and a D30, so lug patterns and knuckles are sort of a secondary worry at this point.

Thanks guys, I'll keep this info in mind when I head to the junkyard this weekend.

76 CJ- Frame Rust and Firewall Attachment

I have a Waggy front D44 and Isuzu Rodea rear D44. They both have matching 6-lug wheel patterns and the rear has factory disc brakes.

Otherwise find matching front/rear Waggy D44's for the closest match in width and least amount of headache.

The front D30 is relatively strong with the right axleshafts, if you're interested in moderately sized tires or moderate wheelin. Then you can upgrade the rear with a Ford 8.8 axle.
