Gas pump keeps shitting iff when filling

84 CJ. Just got this. Took five minutes to put three gallons of gas in because pump handle keeps shutting off. A friend with a 78 said he has to hold pump handle upside down to fill his. Can't do it on mine because of tail light. Any suggestions?

The fill hose on the 76-85 CJs makes a pretty tight bend. I've had CJs of that era that are "touchy" to fill. The hose on yours may be kinked or pinched where it goed btwx the body & the frame causing the flow to back up. If you can't find a kink or pinch in the hose try holding the pump nozzle at various angles and run the pump at the slowest speed you may be able to get it to not shutoff.

Are you filling with one of the suction hoses required in some states, like CA? If so, you might try inserting the nozzle and then pulling back slightly on the outer suction hose.

Nope. I'm in Texas. I checked out the filler hose. No kinks. Has two quick bends in it though.

That is almost always the fix with any vehicle that has a tendency to shut the pump off when filling up.
