Handling issue

I am having a handling issue with my CJ7. I was replacing the sway bar bushings and noticed that the leaf spring bushings are almost gone on both sides. Just pieces left. How much does this affect my handling? It seems as if the leaf springs can move about a 1/2 inch either way with no bushings. Also how big of a job is it to replace them? Thanks for reading this

It would make a big difference when it comes to steering response and sway side to side not to mention rattles. If the bushings are almost completely gone, this might work on your benefit. Lift the jeep on it's frame and leave the tires on. Remove the nut that secures the bolt of the leafspring bushing that you are working on. As you raise the jeep at the frame, watch the leafspring bolt. When the pressure is off the bolt, pull it out and raise the frame some more to where you have enough room to work on it. DON'T FORGET to support the frame with jackstands for your safety. Punch out the center bolt sleeve out, slide a hacksaw blade in the middle and then attach the handle and cut the outer bushing sleeve. Do this on both sides of the diameter of the bushing if you have a difficult time getting the old one out. Replace them with the urethane bushings and your done.

It's not that big of a job at all...my advice is to do what SteelHeadz said, but put your new urethane bushings in the freezer over night and take them out one at a time right before installing them. Urethane bushings have a tight fit but the freezer shrinks them enough so that they slide right in the hangers and spring eyes.

Thanks. Got the bushings in last night. So this is what has been done. New front leaf spring bushings, new sway bar bushings , and tightened up the front wheel bearings. New problem....Took it for a test drive today and I have a pretty good vibration at about 20 mph. I did not have this before. The u-joints seem fine. Could I have over tightened the front wheel bearings? The steering improved alot.
