CVS parking lot

ok, so i am driving today about to come to a stop and when i push in the clutch, there is a pop and this large spring falls from behind the dash to the floor. It is 7" long and is a very rigid spring.

anyway, anyone know what this does? My CJ is still drivable (can't even tell a differance) but should i go out and find a replacement? do i even need it?

Thanks for you help!
Brad.

ps. was looking through my Haynes manual and found a picture of the clutch linkage on a 72-75 cj and the spring looks like the "Overcenter Spring" but my CJ is an 81.

What darkness lurks under the Dash!

Have you noticed any change in any thing when driven. If it aint broke dont fix it. If it aint maken a problem I would just set on it till some thing show up in need. I will be all up in under my dash as of tomorow and it is a 79 so I will be on the look out for some thing to fit that discription. Good Luck tug

I think that is the sprint that holds the clutch pedal back. I have an 83 CJ7 and there is a spring that is mounted to the clutch pedal and goes to a bracket that is close to the dash. It sounds like it matches the description you give.

And no, you will probably not notice any difference since the clutch pressure plate will push the clutch back.

this is it -

It could be the identical ugly sister, the brake spring. They are parralel to each othe under there.

The same thing happened in my 77 blazer, didn't effect my driving so I left it off, that was almost 10 years ago

It's cheap and was ment to be somewhere, replace it. Without it stuff tends to drag or not resest itself. Prematurely wearing pads or throwout bearing. Probable won't notice it any time soon but I would still get another back in there.

TJ Lift Question

I looked at mine again and I do not have a spring on the brake pedal. I do have power brakes, I wonder if that makes a differnece?

i would say to get a spring back in there... it doesn't have to be the exact spring.. but it never hurts to have your petals return to the way they are supposed to

In a few years , you'll probably see grooves cut into your pressure plate srings and/or your throw out bearing will start chattering/squeeling. Should have a half inch or so of free play (at the pedal), until the throw out bearing contacts the pressure plate spring. Clutch pedal could rattle some.
