I think my transmission's dying

It's really hard to shift into 2nd when it's cold. 3rd isn't smooth either. Once I get a couple miles down the road though, it's much better but grabs just a little. Any ideas what this might be or how much it might cost me to get it fixed? I'm hoping it's just a synchro or something since I don't have 2 grand to spend on a new transmission.

I love when this stuff starts to happen when I've only had the thing a week.

I have the same problems in my 93 YJ. I was told by a company called Driveline Specialities to try a GM synchro meshing fluid made for GM vehicles. It's just a quick fix for now but it seems to have improved the way it shifts.[addsig]

I had the same problem in my '97 TJ. Check to see if your clutch fluid is low. It's under the hood on the driver's side. If your clutch feels "spongy", you might have an air bubble in the line too. In that case, you just need to bleed the line. In any case, if that's the problem, it won't cost you but maybe $20. to $30. bucks to fix. If it was your transmission, you probably would have a hard time getting the vehicle to even move.[addsig]

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I checked the clutch fluid and the level seems fine. In fact it seems maybe a little high. The brake fluid was a bit low though, so I'm glad I looked. I don't think it's an air bubble because the clutch really isn't "spongy", but I don't think you can bleed the clutch anyway. I checked somewhere that said everything's internal on the 94s and newer, e.g. no external bleed valve. I wonder if the clutch itself maybe needs replaced. Any thoughts???



I'll look into changing the gear fluid. The previous owner did tell me that he put in some sort of synthetic gear lube to try and correct the problem previously so maybe that stuff just sucks. I'm not sure how to change it though. Never done it before and I can't find a Chilton's manual for my ride. I'll have to think back to when we replaced the transmission in my last Jeep. Although I don't think we drained it before we dropped it. If anyone can offer some pointers for doing that, I'd appreciate it. [addsig]
