Yesterday I took a day off so I took my windshield down and took the doors off. I crossed 6 cops and they all gave me the (rent-a-cop) look
but didn't bother to stop me.

Is this leagal?

Not sure where your located, but it probably varies state to state. There's a guy with a CJ in my area that drives around all the time with the windshield down, but I'm not sure of the exact rule. You should call your local police dept. they will tell you the answer. That's what I did when I wanted to know about taking the doors off... the lady told me to wear my seatbelt!

It's not legal in AR (and almost everything's legal here!). The cop that pulled me over said there's too much of a chance of a rock/bug/bird hitting the driver in the face and causing an accident. He didn't give me a ticket but said he would if he saw me with my wndshield down again.

I've been told you are supposed to wear a helmet if you take down the windshield on public roads. That sounds a little ridiculous to me though. I could see requiring eye protection, but a full face helmet?

I wouldn't wanty to drive more than 25 - 35 with my WS down anywho. I don't think they say much in small towns like Bainbridge, Erwin, Whigham . . . these places are more dirst road than anything.

Can't do it in this state unless you have at least one rear-view facing mirror. When you take the doors off you're okay as long as you have the windshield up with it's mirror in place.

Man that would have ya lookin' like a real "helmut"

Have you ever actually tried driving with the windshield down. It sucks going over 25 mph simply because the wind really hurts the eyes. I wouldn't recommend it. I had t o drive without the glass for an entire day because I was getting a new one put in at the same time I put my new windshield frame in.

It would be cool if you were hunting from in the jeep, but that's not legal here anyway. I put my YJ windsheild down once and it leaked like a sieve afterward. I had to replace the seal under it then all was good again.

Just keep your mouth closed when driving with the windshield down. Wouldn't want to get a bug caught in the old pie hole.

It's not legal in Bama and just about anything goes here. I haven't had a windshield on the Jeep in a year, so I have done it many times. It's better in the woods than on the road. Bugs, Rocks and rain really hurt. I missed it this weekend with all the rain and mud. Fortunately, I had an old Bikini top that I wire tied to the cage for some rain protection. It doesn't work that well with rain blowing in from all four sides, but better that nothing.
My rearview mirror is mounted to the cage, maybe that is why the cops haven't said anything.

i drove with mine down for the first time the other day, it was pretty rad, i think i hit about 50 with no glasses, im used to driving a boat with no glasses so it didnt bother me too much, its just fun the way people look at you when you pull up next to them without a winshield or doors :D

It definitely varies from state to state, and it seems to go a few ways: Some states say absolutely no, simply because of the rock/bug/bird factor causing an accident, yet they allow motorcycles without ferrings and helmets; some say no unless you have a helmet, and they do have mc helmet laws, but I wouldn't be caught dead driving my jeep through McD's drive-thru or anywhere else in public with a helmet--dork city!--although I could see the added safety if you're trail-running with a helmet and no windshield; other states will go with the rear-view mirror angle. If you've got at least one rear-view mirror, you're ok. I've ridden motorcycles with and without eye-protection, and I guess I've got sensitive eyes, cause they get all watery and I can't see over about 20mph......thinking of dropping my windshield for our local 4th of July parade next weekend, though!

I find it hard to believe that some of you guys never dropped the windshield before. That's the best feature of a Jeep. I can't ride in the woods with the windshield up. It's too hot.

I don't know what Indiana's law is on this. I asked the local cop who lives across the street from me, and he didn't know either. All I know is helmets for motorcycles are NOT required, seatbelts ARE required except for truck-plates on vehicles that don't carry passengers (vans, etc). A mirror is required. I'd like to find out what Indiana law is on the Jeep windshield too, as alot of my driving is in town.
