hello everyone
i just joined this site after lurking around for a few weeks. i just bought my first jeep about 3 weeks ago. im a 16 year old that lives in southwest missouri and i love football, wrestling, hunting, fishing, my girlfriend, and prety well anything i can get dirty doing or anything outdoors. i accualy have pure GM loyalty running thru my viens and im am the first person in my imediate famliy to buy something other than a GM make vehichle. but somehow i talked my dad into letting my try this jeep thing. now that u know a little about me ill tell ya what ur interested in. my jeep is a 79 cj5 with the 258 a 4 speed, and thats about all im sure of other than its has a fiberglass tub and one peice front end. it also has a full cage that hopefully i never need. my first question is what transmission do i have? reverse is to the left and up. and what tcase do i have? ive noticed some of the jeeps have a real short tcase shifter but mine is just as tall as my transmission shifter. its got a 2.5 rancho lift under it with 31 10.50 all terrians. my parents want me to get some more offset rims so the tires stick out more so its less tippy. i was thinking about 2 inch ofset. is that about what most of u are running? pics would be great. and those all terrains just aint gonna cut it so im thinking about getting some 33 13.50 ltbs. does anyone run these tires and if so how do they like them? the jeep right now is still gelcoat white and is ugly so im thinking a bright yellow. well il stop bugging everyone now, thanks for the replys in advance.

you have a t18 granny gear 6.31:1 is your first gear....congrats and welcome

one more question, how can i tell what transfer case i have? the guy i bought it from said he thought it has dana 300 but wasnt sure. from what ive read the t18 with granny gear is one of the more desirable transmissions. right? im positive it has a model 20 rearend and im fairly sure it has a dana 30 front but not absolutly. how can i tell what my differental gears are besides counting the teeth on the gears?

wheelin on saturday!

you have a dana 20 tcase, unless someone swapped in a scout 300 which is very unlikely. to det axle ratio lift one tire, turn it one full revolition and count d-shaft revs, or look for a one or two letter code on the right hand side of your rear axles right where the tube goes into the pumking and post it on here and ill tell you.
