Newbie question?

cj was the designation for civilian jeep back in the day, the rest are nothing more than model designations made by Chrysler. People will tell you they have an actual meaning, but thats all BS

Thanks jps4jeep
What model do the new jeeps fall under? Say an 09 model. and how do they get designated

jk is the wrangler
I forget the rest. the liberty was a kj and the Grand was a wj, but they change with the body styles. I think they are now WK and ZK or something.

J8(CKD) Wrangler
JK -Wrangler
K1-(CKD) Cherokee
KK-Liberty
MK- Compass/ Patriot
W2-CKD Grand Cherokee
WH- (Export) Grand Cherokee
WK-Grand Cherokee
XH-(Export) Commander
XK-Commander
These are up to date body designations used for the Jeep line up.. In 2010 the addition of the J3 will be for the CKD Wrangler. I hope this helps.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the one's with a CKD is Export only EXEPT the Grand Cherokees which came with a 3.0 Mercedes Diesel engine. CKD designates a Diesel powered Vehicle.

Yes, as the other says and in 1946 Willys Overland began producing the "Civilian Jeep" or CJ and it was produced in various numeric forms, (for, instance, mine's a CJ 3B) up until Chrysler bought Jeep from AMC and in 1987 the Wrangler was born. It is recognised by it's square headlights. In 1997 the Wrangler came out with the TJ recognisable by the coil springs instead of leaves. The TJ was replaced in 2007 by the JK which is recognisable by it's slightly (2-3") wider stance. This is off the top of the head and may be a little off here and there but true for the most part.:shades:
