Odd occurence during the morning drive

On the way into work this morning, I was cruising down the road in my 98 Sahara and the speedo and tach went to zero and the airbag light came on. All the rest of the guages seemed to be fine. It happened twice on the way in and after about 3 minutes of sitting at zero, they both returned to normal and the airbag light went out. Any thoughts?

weather conditions? only reason i ask is, i had a similar issue with the stereo (aftermarket). but we know how well that vent in front of the windshield likes to swallow up water and its sealed oh so well. small drip made it inside, got the stereo wet, silence...... bout 5-10 minutes later im guessing it dried up enough. rock on.

so i made a lil roof under the dash, over the stereo, to hold me over till i can find the leaks source.

hasnt done it since.

im not sure how the speedo werks in the later model jeeps, elect or mech? if elect. you may end up under the rig tracing back up to the box under the dash from the transmission. but since both the speedo and bags went out.....id start under the dash. look for broken or worn down, shorting wires, and for moisture on or around control boxes. stop the leak or seal the the control boxes?

i dunno? long post for not even being sure if it was raining or not when it happen'd.

It's common, and generally a bad connection at the BUS connector where the guage cluster plugs into the wiring harness. Next time it does it, see if a whack on top of the dash doesn't correct it.

For a more permanent fix, remove the guage cluster and bend each tab in the BUS connector slightly for better contact. Add some dialectic grease and reassemble. Some even ziptie the connector tightly together.

Very common.

That method works for me very well. I hit it really hard one day and I thought it was fixed for good, but it did it again about a week ago. Another near dash-cracking blow and she has been behaving herself.

If it starts again I guess I'll have to resort to pulling it apart.

I've had the same thing in mine. Nothing a good ole' whack to the dash to fix the problem. Must've whacked it pretty hard last time, hasn't acted up for over a month or two.
