Distributor cap ?

1974 cj5 304 hard start replaced rotor cap plug wires still starts hard once it gets hot. Checked timing several times. But while setting the timing I cocked the cap very slightly and motor smoothed out. Then shut the motor off and held the cap over and it started right up? So now I am pulling my hair out should I replace the distributor? Thanks

check the distributor shaft bushings for sideways wear.

Also check the endplay between the distributor gear and the bottom of the distributor base. Exessive endplay can be adjusted but exessive wobble on the shaft to the body will require replacement of the unit.

Installed new distributor running great now. Have a few spare parts now that I was replacing while chasing the problem. Thanks to everyone for the help.
