gear oil

Axles - Gear oil - 80 weight for light duty and normally cooler climates - 90w120 weight for heavy duty and normally warmer climates Note: Some rear axles are equiped with factory posi - a limited slip additive must be put in with the gear oil to extend and protect the limited slip action

you'll prb have to pull the diff cover to be sure if your rig has a LSD.

how to tell?

look in the center of the carrier....between the axles.

4 small gears all the way around..... open diff. no additive needed

four chunks of metal with teeth wedged in there...... after market locker. no additve needed.

clutch plate like disks.......LSD...... additives needed.

ive only had to deal with the first two.

Mind you I don't have one of these, so I'm speaking only second hand, but I thought ATF was proper for the limited slip differentials. I just don't want somebody to make a big mistake. I'd call the dealer and check.

i got a repair manual right here and "tint rookie" is on the money ... regualr 80-90 for light duty , and 85-140 for heavy duty/towing applications... and additive is needed for Limted slips ... ATF is used in most transfer cases not diffs

Yep, be sure to put in the proper additive...wether you have an locker, limited slip, etc. If it's an open rear...then no additive is necessary.

I've never heard of putting ATF in there though. I'd be a little cautious of doing that.

well, i got the fluid changed on Saturday. But now the thing is leaking. It's not major...no puddles under the Jeep or anything, but there's always a drop hanging from the bottom of the pumpkin. I really don't feel like doing that all over again.

Well you could just keep it topped off until the next change, but I'd fix it now as it could get worse without warning and that might change a pain-in-the-neck repair into an expensive one.

Look closely to see if it's coming from the pinion seal or the diff cover.

I'll take a look, but the pinion seal wasn't leaking before I changed the fluid. Could new fluid cause the pinion seal to leak?

those gaskets on the outside of the diff are a snap. 8 bolts (make sure you keep them in the right order) and its off. make sure you hold your new gasket up to the bolts to make sure the guy at the parts counter gave you the right one before you go yankin it all apart.

don't use ATF. New fluid probably wouldn't CAUSE something to leak, but if it was worn before, this might've "pushed it over the edge."

What about a 95 yj 4cly auto ?

i'm guessing you mean what fluid for the auto transmission ?? im not 100% but i'd say its the same stuff rated for the transfer cases which is ATF+4
