Just bought a tj and engine blew

Hi guys so I recently looked into purchasing a 2002 tj 2.5l 149000 miles. It started knocking really hard out of nowhere 3 days ago I was buying it off a friend and he let me drive it for a few days so my mechanic could look at it first and last night while driving the motor just died on me and I heard a rattling noise in the engine. Now since I literally took it 3 days ago. He's offered to fix the engine because we did not exchange money yet. He said he was going to price out a new engine for me is there anything I should look
into when getting a new engine or ask for? Thanks

Make sure the transmission shifts smooth if it's a manual, no hesitation going between gears.

Sorry it is a manual I did that and it seems to shift with ease.

indeed it was but he was real cool about it and said he would replace it with a brand new engine.

Sounds he's doing his words, new engine would ease your mind somehow. Do more testing when done then decide.
