RE: Bootyfab Gallery (warning Dial-uppers)

I have an 88 YJ with a 3.5 Superlift installed. I currently run 33s and might go bigger. I also would like my Jeep to sit a bit taller. I was wondering if I could get away with a set of shackles 1 inch longer than stock without having to do any other mods, such as a slip yoke etc... Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Jeep top

I had 3.5" lift with 1" longer than stock shackles on a YJ with a transfer case drop and I had no problem. Go for it.

Attempted Theft?

I also say go for it. You're asking for trouble with the slipyoke if it pulls out too far under power, but you should be fine with some tweaking of the pinion angle......unless you have bad springwrap, but you would already have problems if that was the case.

Thanks, I will get the longer shackles. I already dropped the transfercase so that should not be a problems, but how do I go about changing the pinion angle if I need it?

Don't get longer shackles, make 'em. It's easy and you can make some a helluva lot cheaper than you can buy 'em.

RE: Re: My last trail run

Buying them might actually be cheaper if you can find them cheap enough on ebay. I got a brand new set of DickCepek shackles for $12 shipped.

They will compensate for pinion angle by rotating the pinion much like shims do.

I would suggest loosening the bolts that mount the transfer case to the xfer case skid plate when you are done, then take a gentle ride around the block, then re-tighten them. That will allow your xfer case to adjust in it's mount to the new angle. This should be done when any lift is done (at least on a YJ).

Don't go longer than 5" on the shackles (4" is stock). big shackle lifts cause steering issues as they add to your caster and at 4" even you are maxing out the slip yoke. You shouldn't have to worry about it slipping out, the YJ's yoke is long enough for 4" but don't go higher without a SYE/new driveshaft.

Just don't let them compensate too much. I'd modify or change the shims to correct. Having the pinion tilted too far up is worse than too far down since the slipyoke is already maxxed out. You want the pinion pointing a couple of degrees lower than ideal when the Jeep is sitting still anyway.
